The Bahrain Centre for Strategic, International, and Energy Studies (“Derasat”) dedicated a day for its researchers and employees for undergoing overall health examinations as well as attending an educational seminar on the prevention of cancer and breast cancer in particular.
Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Derasat Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said that this step, which comes within the framework of the Center’s participation in the World Cancer Awareness Month, is part of its efforts to increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of this disease. He stressed that increased awareness and improved work environment are essential for fighting cancer.
He commented that world statistics indicate that there are 1.38 million new cases and 458 thousand deaths from breast each year. It is therefore important to raise awareness about wrong information and practices regarding this disease and ways to prevent it. Health institutions, think tanks and civic society should coordinate their efforts through organizing awareness and education programs and campaigns within the framework of community partnerships.
It was also noted that Derasat had also recently conducted a survey to determine if early screening for breast and prostate cancers is provided through insurance health care, whether everyone is aware of this service and whether having it as part of their health benefits would encourage people to partake in regular screening examinations and added that the results from this survey will be published next month.
He went on to say that the Kingdom of Bahrain, under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, is one of the leading countries in the field of healthcare at the regional level. The Government has adopted a comprehensive health strategy based on quality, sustainability and ongoing improvement and the financial resources allocated to the health ministry have increased. The number of health centers has also increased significantly in all governorates of the Kingdom, in addition to the Salmaniya Medical Complex and other government hospitals. As a result, the Kingdom of Bahrain came on the top of the inaugural World Bank Human Capital Index in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region which focuses on health and education. The Kingdom also ranks amongst the very high human development countries.
