Roundtable - The Global Coalition against Daesh
Ms. Nancy Jamal, Minister Plenipotentiary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and former spokesperson for the Global Coalition Against Daesh, spoke about the Coalition’s formation and evolution in a Round Table discussion on Weds 12th February, 2020, with officials, MPs, diplomats, researchers and journalists, Ms. Jamal explained the factors that faced the Coalition, and its efforts and achievements in enlisting more countries and defeating Daesh/ISIS. She also described the concepts and methodologies to restoring stability in areas reclaimed from the terrorist group. She went on to talk about the working groups that comprise the Coalition, that focus on military developments, restoring stability, countering ideology and propaganda, stopping the influx of foreign fighters, blocking financing activities and undermining the economic structure of ISIS. The result was in the liberation of 110 thousand square kilometers and assistance for 7.7 million displaced individuals to return to their homes
Nancy Jamal was appointed as the Official Coalition Representative ‘OCR’ in November 2018. Her mandate focused on the coalition’s non-military lines of effort & the wider work of all 79 partners. The “OCR” promotes the Coalition’s stabilisation efforts in areas liberated from Daesh & works with governments, agencies, civil society, military & academics to ensure a high level of engagement across all coalition activities is maintained. Ms Jamal previously headed the advisory board responsible to the Counter Daesh Global Coalition Communications Cell, where she led on building regional partnerships & played a vital role in coalition messaging. She holds the diplomatic rank of Minister Plenipotentiary at the Kingdom of Bahrain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs & was previously Director of Information, Studies & Research, mandated to implement a comprehensive communications strategy in line with the Kingdom of Bahrain’s Foreign Policy. Prior to that she held the position of Director of External Relations & Global Outreach at the Bahrain Center for Strategic, International & Energy Studies ‘Derasat’. Ms Jamal has held the position of Chief of Foreign Media where she played an essential role in setting & executing an outward communications strategy. Simultaneously, Ms Jamal held a position within the structure of UN Habitat’s Khalifa bin Salman Award for Urban Development & was a member of the National Committee to Combat Trafficking in Persons. A Fulbright Scholar, Ms Jamal earned a BSc in Business Administration from the University of Bahrain & obtained an MA in Public Communication from the American University, Washington D.C. She holds a Diploma in International Law, Constitutional Law & Human Rights from the University of Bahrain & has completed an Executive Leadership Programme at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She is a keen advocate against Domestic Violence & supports the understanding of Dementia, Alzheimers & mental illnesses.
