Artificial intelligence has become one of the most important indicators of a nation’s military strength, given the massive and rapid advancements in this field.

This study, “NATO’s Strategy for Employing Artificial Intelligence in Defense,” prepared by Dr. Chloe Berger, an Assistant Professor at the National Defense College in the United Arab Emirates, analyzes NATO’s experience in employing this technology militarily. In October 2021, NATO published its first-ever artificial intelligence strategy.

The strategy outlined key objectives that the alliance aims to achieve. It seeks to establish NATO as the leading organization in the artificial intelligence revolution within the military domain. It also focuses on utilizing artificial intelligence to enhance interoperability among NATO forces. Another priority is ensuring NATO’s continued contribution to the technological advancement of artificial intelligence. Additionally, the strategy aims to strengthen allies’ cyber defenses to counter attempts to exploit vulnerabilities within NATO’s technologies.

This study also provides an analysis of NATO’s efforts to achieve these objectives and the significant outcomes that have resulted. It highlights the challenges facing the alliance, including the rapid development of these technologies—particularly autonomous weapons—and the absence of a global framework regulating the military use of artificial intelligence, making it a highly competitive field.
